Mad Scientess Jane Expat
Death Valley, California, USA. 2003.
I note that this photo was taken when my self esteem was pretty low. I'd finished my PhD, was doing my first postdoc and was not really sure what to do with my life. I was coming to the conclusion that academia was not for me, but all the alternatives scared the poop out of me. So I made myself look like the cartoon/superhero character I wanted to be but didn't feel like I actually could be.

"So I made myself look like the cartoon/superhero character I wanted to be but didn't feel like I actually could be."
I like the straight-forwardness of this statement. I think a lot of people, including myself, have done this during indecisive periods.
Although I'm sad that we all have had to suffer, I'm honoured to be in such good company.
It's a sort of armour, I feel. Not just to deflect the slings and arrows from outside, but to hold the wobbly bits in.
The fact that you finished a PhD is heroic in and of itself. With all that you have accomplished so far in your life, you'd definitely make a good super hero for little girls everywhere.
It's sometimes difficult to remember that finishing a PhD is such a feat. I spend my days surrounded by them, and it's quite easy to forget that when you exist in such a rarefied atmosphere.
This! I often feel inadequate looking at the people around me, then try to remember we're in one of the best universities in the world and actually are surrounded by world leaders in their fields.
And there may also be a tendency for post-big-project depression, and there's very little bigger than a PhD when you do it.
It's ironic that you say your self esteem was pretty low, because you're so hot in this photo!
I was also pretty physically strong when this photo was taken, as I was rock-climbing a few times a week. >.<
Well it's a good look. :)
And for the record, I owned a trenchcoat BEFORE I read Hellblazer. :P
I miss that look sometimes. I don't think dreads would go down well at my work though.
*high-fives* on your pre-hipster hipness. :P
PS - Bonus points for Orbital. ;)
\o/ Ahh, memories of being completely lost in music on the dancefloor.
What a great photo you really look good and you know you can be all that you can be! Go for It! My favorite Motto!
