It struck me the other day that in 17 years of maintaining an online presence, I've never been stalked. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. This is a good thing. I'm just somewhat surprised, given the number of friends (online and in meatspace) who've been plagued by them over the years. From the heady early days on rec.music.industrial to the angst-ridden web pages of graduate school and now in my mellow, ripened state on DW/LJ, I've always managed to stay creep-free and attract minimal drama. Some of this is because my group/readership/circle has never been larger than a few hundred people. But also, I think I know what rules of interaction have helped me stay out of the sights of creepy persons. Do you agree? What tactics do you use to keep them at bay?

Poll #1747867 Watching you.

Internets, why have I never been stalked?

You post insufficient public nudity
You talk about your personal life in guarded terms.
You've been lucky.
Your readership is generally sane and intelligent.
Your crazy magnet is turned off.
You don't post about politics.
You have, you just didn't know it.
Some other reason.

Some other reason?

It's luck. It's like with driving - you can be the safest driver in the world and make all the right choices, but in the end you never know when a crazy drunk person will come out of nowhere and mow you down.

Excellent analogy. You can do a lot to avoid crazy, but sometimes it smacks right into you.

I shall hope that my luck continues to hold, then.

In my freshman year in college, I had this only college blog, which was mostly about my university and I used to be very political in my postings, and take my word, it's like someone opened floodgates. These conservative crazies would post and send me crazy emails about why I shouldn't like Kerry or Dems. So, politics is creep fest.

I think, most of these others you listed are the main contributing factors.

I used to post about politics occasionally and almost invariably those posts seemed to attract people who wanted to explain to me why I should become a conservative/anarchist/libertarian. Strangely, no one tried to convert me into a feminist liberal.

I think stalking is largely random. lemur_catta had one a few years ago because some crazy Jamaican woman was convinced that she had stolen "her man" i.e. me. The shit that happened was just crazy and we had to get the police involved. Why she picked us I really don't know.

That seems to be the consensus view. You can do your best not to project as a vulnerable person, but if someone nutty decides to fixate on you, your behaviour doesn't really have much to do with that choice. All you can do at that point is protect yourself.
