21/52: Stift Melk

This is a spiral staircase in the baroque Benedictine monastery (still functioning) in Melk, Austria. The place is absolutely fantastic and I'll be sharing more shots, but this was the standout for me. All of the spiral staircases are blocked off, so I had to take this by leaning over a railing, pointing the lens ceilingward and clicking blindly.

Adso of Melk was William of Baskerville's sidekick in The Name of the Rose

My parents and I all mentioned this to one another when at Melk. it was very exciting. And a bit nerdy, I guess.

The Austria guidebook mentioned the Eco connection to Stift Melk. I need to re-read it because the decade between my last reading and the present has obliterated most of it from my memory. :/

The story is supposed to be written down by Adso, at the end of his life, at Melk.

No, but I'm sure it wouldn't mind a valet.

It's a stunning place. Well worth the 1.5 hour train ride from Vienna.

Is that Trompe l'oeil art on the underside of the stairs?! Fantastic!

Yes - it's quite disorienting when viewed from certain angles!

We went there! It was awesome. Our tour guide was particularly rad, I thought.

Yay! It was really quiet when we went there. We only saw one other couple during our walk-through. Now I want to go back there and have a tour. I enjoyed going through the first time without one, but it would be nice to glean a little more context than the signs did, since less than half of them had been translated into English.

Thank you for reading! I made a new post with lots more photos from Stift Melk, but I didn't think any of those were good enough for Flickr.
