The year of the bunneh [20110205|18:35]
Mad Scientess Jane Expat
[with a hint of |Daft Punk - Technologic]

Oolong wishes you a happy new year, full of waffles.

I'm a couple of days late, but still, Happy New Year, if you're following a lunisolar calendar! It feels appropriate to pause and take a moment to appreciate all the things I have managed to tick off my Goal List based on the Arbitrary Gregorian Boundary Condition timeline.

The full list is here (DW/LJ), but if you can't be bothered to look at all my lovely strike-throughs, which I get enormous pleasure out of doing myself, here are the main points summarized.

I have:

  • Been to the gym at least 3 times a week for a month
  • Obtained a provisional driving license
  • Gotten my eyes checked & purchased new glasses
  • Purchased flights & arranged some accommodation for trips to Austria, California & Iceland

As you may have noticed, however, all this Accomplishing (and being extremely busy at work both with teaching and "actual" work), has had a detrimental effect on my blogging habit. Additionally, the "regular gym attendance" portion of the endeavour means that instead of reading or writing on the morning train, I am usually passed out. I aim to be able to take my foot off the gas a bit once I've delivered a major bit of code - and finished planning all these trips. That way I can get back to indulging my penchant for navel-gazing and self-portraiture. I'm not certain anyone else enjoys that as much a bunny with a waffle on its head, but I do.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Iceland. It's one of my favourite places EVAR.

Ahhh, I'm so looking forward to it. I want to sit in a big geothermal pool and stare through the steam until I'm as wrinkled as a raisin. :D

What do the new glasses look like?

Congrats to you for keeping up with the gym too! What kind of workouts do you do there? I changed my diet and am down 10 pounds so far this year, so if I can do it, you surely can!

Metallic red frames for the everyday glasses, and chunky black plastic for the sunglasses. I'll post photos when I get them fitted.

I tend to alternate between elliptical trainer and treadmill for 30 minutes and then alternate between legs & arms (with core training for both) with free weights and/or machines for the remaining 20-30 minutes. I keep thinking I should try using a personal trainer, but it feels like a lot of hassle to arrange that for 6 AM when I'm not really awake anyway. Plus I'm not sure what I'd say when they asked me what my goal was. I'm not really out to lose weight. It'd be nice, of course, but I just want to keep fit, and since I have to work a full day and commute after going to the gym, I don't want to be knackered after my workout.

Gung Hee Fat Choy! I might go check out the parade and dragons in chinatown tomorrow...

Related to your post but not the New Year, I need to make some headway on a UK driving license myself.

Yay! I might pootle down to Mill Road and see if anything's happening there tomorrow. :)

It's not an easy task getting a UK license. The practical test is one of the most difficult in the world. I'm pretty jittery even just about taking the theory test. Getting a provisional license is easy, though - just fill out the form online and then send in your passport when you receive the application letter. And it's good for 10 years so you can take your time!

That is an amazing feat to get the gym three times a week for a month. I can't seem to muster one trip a week.

How hard is it to get a UK driver's license? I know an American license isn't so hard at all.

My gym is a 10-minute walk from my house. I wouldn't have joined it otherwise as it's a bit snooty for my taste!

It's quite difficult to get a UK licence. The theory test is harder and the practical is supposedly one of the hardest in the world. Most people don't pass the practical on their first try. I got my American licence after taking driving lessons for three weeks. I don't believe that's going to be possible for the UK licence.
