Goals for 2011, now 2012 [20101231|19:34]
Mad Scientess Jane Expat
[Tags|, , , , , ]

ETA: I've decided to keep this as a rolling list of long-term goals.

I'm going to break my "New Year Resolutions must always be silly" rule this year, and actually put down some concrete goals for 2011 2012. I'm trying to break them down into bite-size, achievable steps so they get done. And I'm making this post sticky for two reasons: (a) I can easily update it as I achieve Things, and add new Things to Achieve and (b) so the goals, er, stick. *pause for collective groan*

I think a trip to the west coast will probably take me to California this year. I need to go to SD to clear out my storage space & ship all my stuff to the UK, so a traverse of the coast (possibly SD => LA => SF) would make sense.

I wanna go back to Iceland - it's nearly 14 years since I was last there, and that's too long.

It's always been a place I've either flown over or through - an intriguing waystation. But it looks amazing and I'm so glad my parents decided they want us to meet them there this year instead of the usual trip to Washington.

Have you been to Iceland before? It will change you.

UK driving license: no problem if you already know how to drive, as you'll only have to learn the different quirks of the UK test. The DVD for the theory/hazard is so useful!

You both got the driving/driver's bit right, but ours is a licence, not a license. (-;

That was intentional - I have a proprietary style guide that uses UK spellings for most things, but I use other spellings where I find it appropriate. "Licence" has always looked like a misspelling to me, therefore it's out as far as I'm concerned. However, there are other spellings from other countries that I also don't use, so it all evens out in the end.

Licence is the noun, license is the verb - the same as with practice/practise.

Simples!

But hey, I was only teasing....

Yes, I know the difference between licence the noun and license the verb, but what I'm saying is that spelling the noun as licence makes it look incorrect, as if one were choosing an "Italian" spelling over a "French" one, hence my choice to use the more "French" spelling in my personal/business style guide.

I haven't been there before, only flown over or through it.

I'm glad to hear the DVD is useful. The practical driving test is pretty hard, especially compared to the US test, so I'm determined not to feel bad if I have to take it more than once! (I took 4 weeks of driving lessons in the States and then took the test and passed it first time, which I don't believe will be a repeatable experience here.)

Good for you for setting goals - I hope you're able to achieve them!

If you don't like your gym, you might like crossfit, which they have worldwide, and is a great workout. There's a bunch in the UK, so maybe one's near you... http://www.crossfit.com/cf-affiliates/

And I'm jealous of your Iceland trip!

Thank you. Hopefully breaking everything down into steps will make it less likely that I'll give up on them.

I'll check out crossfit if I'm not satisfied with the gym after 3 months. Thanks!

You don't actually need to get an eye test for the UK driving license, and the requirement is pretty minimal. Mainly assuming you have nothing unusual with your eyesight, if you can read a number plate 60 foot away, that's OK (wearing glasses/contacts if that's normal).

The theory test is also pretty Mickey Mouse, if you read the book (or DVD etc), you'll be OK. Some of the example questions come under the category of "You would be insane if you drove like this" responses, so anyone with a level of intelligence above a Whelk shouldn't find it a challenge.

I'm pretty sure I can use my current glasses for the test, but I haven't had my eyes tested since I left the States, so I really should get them checked beforehand. My current license doesn't have a restriction on it, but I don't really like driving without my glasses.

I think my brain has at least two Whelks to rub together, so with a bit of study I should hopefully be able to pass. :P
