ATTN: 19 days of radio silence [20100701|00:58]

Tomorrow - er, later today - I'll be getting on a plane to Nairobi. With any luck, I'll have virtually no internet access and unless circumstances necessitate it, I'm not going to purchase a Kenyan SIM either.

I love traveling. Unfortunately, I also loathe packing. For most of my adult life, I've practised the following preparatory ritual for trips.

  1. Procrastinate horribly
  2. Get drunk the night before I depart (~ 8 PM to 2 AM)
  3. Realize the taxi is coming or I need to get a train at 6 AM
  4. Stagger around hurling things at a suitcase which is either too large or too small (~2-3 AM)
  5. Sleep fitfully for three hours
  6. Wake up, figure I have money and a passport and that'll do for whatever I forgot

This time, however, I had sufficient perspicacity to understand that this approach was not going to work for this trip, which involves much more serious preparations like vaccinations and purchasing mosquito nets. Therefore, I am proud to report that the ritual underwent vital alterations.

  1. Procrastinate horribly
  2. Get stuck on the train home because a lorry has hit a level crossing (~7 PM to 9 PM)
  3. Arrive home, stagger around hurling things at an appropriately sized suitcase, including malaria pills (~9 PM to midnight)
  4. Get drunk (midnight to, oh, now)
  5. The rest will probably play out similarly

See that critical reversal? I packed BEFORE I got drunk! I'm sure this leap in maturity will serve me well over the upcoming 19 days. Be well, all of you, and I'll see you on the other side.

And does the "get drunk" part help that much? Or it's just traditional?

Have a marvelous time!

[BOGGLE] Nairobi?   =8o|

For 19 *days*?!?   =8oO

[STARTS FEELING THE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS ALREADY]

Have a great trip! [HUGS]

(P.S. Good ritual, very similar to mine. I've always saved the getting drunk phase for when I'm already on route and its too late to be worrying about all those things I forgot to do that would keep popping into my head if I was sober. Might wanna try that next time. =:o} )

Ha, I have exactly the same reaction to Packing Day, which I also had yesterday - though our destination is A LOT less exciting. I stupidly skipped the getting drunk step entirely this time. Woe.

Have a fantastic trip, I can't wait to read all about it!
