[the weather today is |hurrah!]

I am proud to report that, after spending this gorgeous weekend largely indoors staring at numbered dials and then taking an exam, I possess an Amateur Radio license.

This means I have the right to build and operate a radio rig and transmit/receive on the HF & VHF bands allocated to amateurs. It also means that, assuming we get the grant I applied for to put our ground station in a school, I can use the transmission functions of the setup.

I don't have my callsign yet, as my pass result for the exam still has to go through Ofcom, but once I do I can provide it to those who might be interested in trying to get in touch on the air. Now where's my anorak?

No, you definitely should use them for evil.

I'm hoping it'll have application if we end up building our own CubeSat here in the lab. We'll need a ground station to communicate with it. We already have the kit, but without a license, you can't transmit, so having a license gives me the right to do so.

congratulations! sadly, while i have a license in the States, i lack easy access to any equipment that is likely to be able to reach you on the amateur bands. (also, my HF privileges are rather limited, but supposedly that can be fixed if i bother to take more exams.)

I'm limited myself at the moment (to 10 W). I think my maximum range in HF is probably North Africa/eastern Scandinavia. I'll be taking another course in September to upgrade to an Intermediate license, so that might give me enough oomph to get to the States if I use the club's rig in Cambridge.
