The bloke & I went to Norfolk this weekend to see his parents. Our motive may not have been simple filial devotion, as the weather was spectacular and they have a swimming pool which has just been de-mothballed in preparation for summer.

As we sat peacefully enjoying the descending sun after an excellent barbecue cooked by the bloke, his father became somewhat expansive in his reminiscence. I have not previously heard the story of his OBE'ing, so my ears perked up when the subject arose. I think it is necessary to record this portion of the ceremony for posterity.

When he met the Queen, she asked him which portion of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food was his remit.

Gravely, he answered, "Fish, mum."

Without batting a lash, she rejoined, "Not so many of those as there used to be."

So, your bloke's old man might have been one or two offices along the corridor from one or more of my bosses, once upon a time...?

(I was in MAFF's IT Directorate from 1987 - 1997, based at Guildford)

It's possible! I haven't seen his CV, but I do know that he's been many places, has visiting lectureships in multiple countries and used to go on fishing trips for months at a time.

One gets to speak of oneself as "One". I'm not sure it gets much better.

She makes it easy to come round to the idea of swearing fealty to a Queen. The options for King, on the other hand...
