Want to participate in an Important Scientific Undertaking?

Just follow these easy steps!

  1. Download this handy .zip file (7 MB) containing the ten Dr Who themes as MP3s. The archive also contains an MP3 of a theremin being played, in case you don't know what a theremin sounds like.

  2. Listen to the theremin first. Then listen to each of the Dr Who themes.

  3. Vote in this poll to select the ones you think would be best to have students learn to play after building their own theremin.

Poll #1398540 Build a theremin, play a Dr Who theme.

Which theme(s) do you think would be best for the students to play?

    Theme 1
    Theme 2
    Theme 3
    Theme 4
    Theme 5
    Theme 6
    Theme 7
    Theme 8
    Theme 9
    Theme 10

Fess up. Were you biased because you knew that the themes went with a particular Doctor?

    Yes! Guilty as charged, dammit!
    *shuffles feet, looks at floor*
No, not at all. Nopenopenope, not me.

Call me a grumpy old wotsit but I really can't think of any reason why one is better than another.

I suspect you're not alone in this sentiment.

Mostly, actually, I think the earlier ones are gratifyingly creepy, and the effect got steadily lost as they fiddled with it.

I agree. I quite like the older ones. The theremin sound gets lost in some of the newer ones. I think I might play them both an old one and one of the two newest and let them choose. I suspect they might pick a new one because it's familiar, but it'll be interesting to see.

Thanks for voting, btw!

The site with the download is not working just now, but from memory, I'd say the earlier ones would be better for theremin fun!

Oh yes, the theremin sound is much more prevalent in the first four themes.

Hi! You don't know me, but I stumbled in here while reading around after MammothFail and the massive FoC shout-out wotsit post thingy.

I read three of your posts at random, while succesfully fighting the urge to fall instantly head-over-heels in love with you, but I'm afraid finding a post about DW themes tucked away in here has broken my resolve. I fully expect my heart to follow in short measure. But may I friend you anyway? =:o>

(Oh, and just in case anyone's unclear: There was never an actual theremin involved. =:o} )

Ooh, thank you for the article link. I think I won't tell the students until afterward, though. ;-)

To avoid awkwardness, I have preemptively friended you.
