ExoMars + Mars Science Lab == Beagle 3 [20081209|11:37]

NASA and ESA are talking about making ExoMars a joint mission, since the new NASA Mars rover's launch has now been delayed from 2009 to 2011 due to design problems.

Article here. My favourite part of it (emphasis mine):

Europe has already made a decision to delay the launch of its own Mars rover, ExoMars, from 2013 to 2016.

Dr Weiler said there was a possibility this mission could also now become a joint venture with NASA even though ExoMars is quite advanced in its design.

As someone who very recently worked on ExoMars, I would like to take this opportunity to say HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHadvancedHAHAHAHA.

Seriously, though, the European mission has just been delayed to a launch date five years later than the NASA mission. It's not that the design is more "advanced" than NASA's, it's just different, and it would be difficult to integrate the two.

I like to imagine that the joint mission will involve sending both rovers to Mars at the same time, thus saving on rocket fuel costs, and then when they land, the rovers will fight to the death breed and produce baby rovers go off on their separate missions and sabotage each others reports.

Robot crater fight! The old rovers can be herded to the centre of the ring and made to do battle too.
