Dun wanna be friends. Wanna eat you!

(+) Last Friday, I finally managed to pin down two teachers at a school in Teddington that specializes in visual arts to do a Researchers in Residence placement. This requires me to spend between 14 and 24 hours total with the students. We've planned to pack a good chunk of it into two full day sessions on 3 and 17 December. On the 3rd, I'll spend 50 minutes talking to Year 10 & 11 students about the Cassini spacecraft and Enceladus, and then run a question-and-answer session on what it's like to do a Ph.D and work in an instrumentation lab. I will do this four times, twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon.

In a fit of madness, I agreed to be available to a small group of students who are keen to become science researchers at lunchtime, and to attend science club after school. I predict that I shall be absolutely knackered.

(+) Last Friday night, the bloke & I celebrated a friend's 30th at a club in Covent Garden that featured live Brazilian music, performances by capoeiristas and beautiful, surprisingly unpretentious hipsters.

(+) On Saturday, the bloke finally met some of the London friends that I don't live or work with.

(+) On Sunday, I painted for the first time in months.

(+) Pay raise!

(-) The ominous loom of impending deadlines, one of which I'm fairly certain I'm going to miss. Which one is entirely up to chance.

(-) LJ failing to send comment notifications. Send the WAAAHmbulance.

(-) My failure to purchase any mince pies as of yet. Disgraceful.

Finally, a meme. What has surprised you the most about me (if anything) since beginning to read my LJ?

Yes. Having no meetings or deadlines on Friday, I think I may need to sit at home in my jammies and paint again.

That evening out eating Korean BBQ and drinking shoju is a very happy memory for me. I must visit SD & LA again soon.

Hm, I didn't have to do that - whinging about it was apparently enough!

I would say finding out that you are my face twin would be the most surprising.

After that, emmmm... I have to admit you riding in a stretch hummer to a baseball game with your colleagues made me do a little head tilt. Other than that, not much about you surprises me. (Ha, I typed that "not much about me surprises you." Freudian?) I think we lay aside a lot of preconceptions and snap judgments when we read blogs because there aren't so many visual cues on which to base our prejudice.

I agree. The photos don't do justice to the resemblance. It's quite striking.

For the record, the stretch hummer event was through Marco's work & work colleagues. Although I surprised at myself for agreeing to go along. Curiosity proved too strong for my instinctive repulsion. :-P

P.S. Congrats on the pay raise. Does that mean that you now make "jack" rather than "jack and squat?" I personally just moved up to "grossly underpaid" from "unforgivably, horrendously underpaid." It's a fantastic feeling, I tell you.

I'm not going to complain about my salary, given the current economic climate!

Seriously though, it's rather nice to have a bit extra. Means I don't feel guilty spending on myself now and then, instead of hoarding my extra cash to ensure I can buy presents for people's birthdays & xmas.

Yes, yes, I suppose we should be glad to just to be securely employed.

But whining is so very satisfying... :)

My main point, other than whining, was that yes, it's quite nice to have a little extra added to the budget. I totally bought little drawer organizers for my dresser and some underwear, and did not feel bad about it! It's awesome.

Two words:

Cassini Division!

Heh. You wouldn't say that if you could see me right now, after two days of solid work except for six hours of sleep. The cracks are starting to show!

I don't know if it would be surprise, exaclty, but I always think how cool it is that you work on Cassini. I wanted to get into planetary science initially, but settled for solar as the next closest thing!

Mmm, heliospheric physics. I do enjoy admiring all the images & movies coming from Stereo.

Now if only the sun would wake up again...someone needs to tell it that solar minimum is over.

Yes, it is being rather quiet. Maybe it's saving up a surprise!

Surprises... How quiet and well behaved you have been on the times I have met you and then happily admitting to something that was announced behind a filter.

:)

It puts me in mind of a Mike Harding sketch. (Northern comedian highly recommended for you and that lad who wants to know about English phrases).

"Hens necks" ..imagine a group of gossipy northern women sticking their heads up quickly cos they just heard something interesting, accompanied by the sound of a gaggle of hens.
she never..she did..hussy...just like her Mam....tut.... ;)

as someone who's sort of reunited with you after a long period of absence, i am just surprised at how you've changed (all in good ways IMHO).

Thank you. I think I'm pretty different from the way I was at university, too. I remember being awfully nervous and insecure through most of it.
