Swallowtail

Shot on top of Dog Mountain in the Columbia Gorge, Washington. We decided to do this climb on a whim. We'd obtained a sketchy list of hikes from the Discovery Center in The Dalles, Oregon. The bloke had a quick look through it, and nearly all of them were listed as "easy/moderate", except this one, which was labeled "most difficult, dude" (okay, maybe not the dude part). Anyway, it amused us, and we thought that "most difficult" when compared to a bunch of "easy/moderate" hikes wouldn't be that challenging. HA. Try a 3000 foot elevation change over the course of 3.1 miles of trail. Never let it be said that I haven't suffered for my art.

True. I think we just like the phrasing, honestly, and didn't think it through much more than that. This is what happens when you let people who are forced to be analytical and methodical for their work all the time go on holiday. They instantly become the willing agents of chaos.

Thank you. Will do my best. What with the MAG team meeting today & tomorrow and the Saturn After Cassini book symposium next week, though, I expect it will be bits and pieces at a time!

Oh yes. I haven't done that drive along there, with crossing back and forth between Highway 14 in Washington and the restored bits of Highway 30 in Oregon for over 10 years (if not 15), so all I remembered about it was that it's beautiful and should be done by anyone visiting the Pacific Northwest.
