Saturn's rings from the other side

This nifty image shows the side of the ring system that's normally not illuminated by the Sun, for those of us looking at Saturn from Earth. It almost mitigates the troubles that our instrument has been having since last Friday. We've sent up one patch but it hasn't cleared the alarm. The poor thing is still sick. It needs power-cycling. I have to admit, "power-cycling" is possibly my favourite euphemism. Whoever came up with such a fancy way of saying "turn it off and turn it back on again, that usually fixes it" deserves a gold star. Possibly tattooed onto his/her forehead.

Those crazy old folks. My grandpa tried that one a couple of times too, before it all got just a little too exciting...:-/

I'm glad you enjoyed it ! I liked the pub afterwards - I want to learn some Cole Porter songs so I can join in. We should do that again sometime !

Oooh beautiful rings.

Power cycling is an excellent term. So much more professional sounding than even "cold boot".

They are amazing, those floaty bits of water-ice and rock, aren't they.

These images remind me to take a step back and remember that there's a big hunk of metal out there, whizzing around a planet, and we send it commands pretty much every day, and it does what we tell it, billions of kilometres away. I mean. Wow.

I thought that's what rebooting was, but I'm using power cycling from now on.

i thought power cycling was what those tour de france wankers did. :)

i like that you can look at this photo as either rings around or rings cut out of and also the monochromatic-ness. very neat.

Ooooh, thanks! ...my new background-du-mois; I'll have to move Eta Carinae to the PC and the sultry vampire to the laptop. So much beauty...

That Eta Carinae image looks like a wrapper for a strawberry-flavored sweet. It's making my mouth water!
