We were on a boat tour of the islands off the coast of Dubrovnik when these shots were taken. We had just finished lunch and the crew were throwing the remains of the grilled mackerel we'd eaten to the gulls. I fixed the aperture and shutter speed and set my dSLR on autofocus. Then I handed my camera to an inexperienced photographer and invited him to snap away freely. I had a prime lens on the camera throughout the trip, so zooming was not an option. After a bit of cropping and editing in Tatershop, these turned out best.

I'm glad you think so! I was most agreeably surprised by the outcome myself.

Yay!

Although it does make me feel rather dubious about my own photography skills. My only consolation is that they all needed a certain amount of reframing and editing (mostly removal of extraneous bird bits). ;-)

Feeling a little dubious about my own right about now. I finally did my first run through the Alcatraz shots. Apparently I couldn't shoot straight to save my life that night. *headdesk*

As I tried to figure out what made the image on the left so engaging, I realized that a big part of it is that all four birds in the foreground seem to be addressing the camera! That's a wonderful shot!

I think there were about a hundred of them. And they were diving and taking the bits of mackerel directly from the crew's hands, while the boat was in motion. It was a fearsome sight.

I did have to edit that image heavily to achieve that effect, so thank you for noticing! There were more than a few extraneous bird bits around the edges that didn't add anything to it.

It was also amazing how the gulls kept pace with the boat, and how they could dive so precisely when the morsels were held out. It makes me smile just thinking about it.
