The proposed multi-spacecraft, Earth-orbiting Cross-Scale mission to study complex plasma structures has made it through to the next round of selection in the European Space Agency's Cosmic Vision programme.
A list of the missions that will be assessed over the next year and a half can be found here. The study teams will evaluate the technological requirements, the value of the science research, the potential for international collaboration and of course, the cost of each mission. Only two will be funded and built for launch in 2017-2018.
Additionally, Double Star, in whose honor we held our drunken wake last week, apparently met with its end a few days later than the projected re-entry date. It vaporized on the morning of 14 October. The fluxgate magnetometer on board was one of the best our lab has built to date. Fortunately, the archived science data will outlive the spacecraft by many years.
