Mad Scientess Jane Expat
I was looking at my Friends list this morning and thinking. Some might say that was my first mistake, but anyway, I got curious.|
Tell me why you picked your username and what, if anything, it means.
Mine's pretty straightforward. It's a permutation of my real first name. I used to be "lilith23" because I've been using Lilith as a screen name/handle since 1994, the year I discovered that I'm a big goth. It stopped feeling genuine a while ago so I changed it to something more personal.
I guess I was in an Eddie Izzard mood at the time. Any time is a good time for an Eddie Izzard mood.
Actually, the username was pure nanila. I did the default icon. =)
I used to be pinkcolumbine
, but then my life went awry and I felt like I needed a new name, to turn the page. I picked lesyeuxouverts
- With Open Eyes - because it reflected my new, less idealised take on stuff. And it's in french and purty.
Well, my username is an anagram of my real first name.
Obviously all the cool kids are doing it.
I picked it on a whim really when I made my journal. I'd been Spike in just about everything for so long that I decided I wanted something different. I got Spike as a nickname when I was 13 because I was the 4th Daniel in my PE class and because of my last name. It was getting to the point where Spike and I were starting to have a few differences and I needed something different.
my current one is some bad latin. my only worry is that people won't know that i know
my old one was because of this
, and not, as some people think, a sparkly fish.
When I started out on LJ in, duh, 2003, most of the people I knew were from the local burner crowd who knew the feet and would thus associate me with the handle.
I wrote about the username choices a bit when I decided to change mine from "jupitah" to "ironed_orchid"
To quote myself: I'm using 'Ironed Orchid' or 'The Ironed Orchid' a lot lately. The Iron Orchid is a character from Moorcock's
Dancers at the End of Time series, and she appeals to me in certain frames of mind. The Ironed Orchid came from that, but the ironed part makes me think of ironing and domesticity, as well as being coated with, if not actually made of, iron. Perhaps I feel the need for a hard exterior these days. It probably doesn't stand up to deep analysis, but it amused me at the time, and also was a necessary departure from Jupitah, which is a decade old, and no longer has the significance it did when I picked it, pretty much at random [from the Tori Amos song, Hey Jupiter], because I needed to make up a user name on IRC [in 1996].
My entries on name changing are tagged
I took the 'ophelia' bit from one of my favourite Natalie Merchant songs, 'Ophelia.' Added the 'blue' bit because it needed something extra and it came into my favourite part of the 'Ophelia' song: Ophelia was a rebel girl/A blue stocking suffragette/Who remedied society/Between her cigarettes.
Well, my old one, qb1kenobe was a play on queen b, my sci-fi geekdom, and my powers of persuasion. She kinda left the building (in protest) when I started wearing pretty dresses and was replaced by Belle Laqueen, my cheeky pin-up personality. Belle Laqueen just has a ring of confidence around it that I can use to pep myself up on those bad days. Know what I mean?
Apart from Slice Andice, all my personalities pay homage to my main one - Queen B, Ruler of the Universe. Slice Andice is an entitiy all of her own and almost at the same level as the original....oooh, she's not gonna like that.
I see a power struggle coming on....*L*
being an unimaginative namethief, I just swiped it out of The Illuminatus. I always wanted to be part of the oppressive regime that's taking (or has taken) over the world in secret, but I can't. So I play one on the internet. Even if the greyfaces were the least members of the society...
I used to use my initials as a chat handle, and had a real-life friend ask "What's a sickle?" I'd never thought of pronouncing it that way. It seemed too much fun to pass up.
tharine is the latter half of catharine.
it was a nickname in high school, is all. but i quite like it.
Nation of Sheep was a band I was in. In Boston. There was a Nation of Sheep song that used samples of William Burroughs - "in the future there will be an international police apparatus" and Timothy Leary - "The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want. Wait a minute. If the Lord is my shepherd, what does that make me?" The band had me - the token white guy singing and guitar, an Eastern Indian playing guitar, a Puerto Rican bass player and a Japanese drummer. There were a couple of bizarre metaphorical songs about the subtlety of racism and a lot of dark instrumentals. Man I still want to be in this band.
My actual handle that I use for everything is iguanamind. And I don't know how I came up with that. But Justine made my journal for me back in the days of invitations to livejournal and she used Nation of Sheep because I had re-recorded some of the music from that band and I was considering putting together another band with that name.

I wish I had a better answer than "my initials", but...
Back in/around 1998/9, a friend and I were both really obsessively into Buffy. One day she decided that 'Ripper' suited me for a nickname. As I'm not an aging, tweed-clad Librarian, I'm not really sure why. But it stuck.
Lynn is my middle name.
