Today is shopping. We get up at around 11 instead of 7, which is what the alarm was set for. We buy bus passes up the street but have to walk down to the Camden Town stop because the buses are all full. We spend all day in Covent Garden and Oxford Circus, buying warm clothes. After receiving the remainder of our clothes, I noticed that my stock of tiny babydoll t-shirts is quite high, while my stock of things that I can actually wear in this weather and not freeze to death is quite low. I buy mostly practical things, but there is a gorgeous skirt at a store called The Arrogant Cat that I have to have. It is much too expensive. I am ashamed to even write down what I paid for it. At least it is warm.
We go home and cook ourselves a fry-up. Thick streaky bacon, sausages, eggs over-easy, baked beans and toast. It is a cholesterol bomb. It is also unspeakably delicious when you've spent the whole day walking around in the cold. Janelle calls and invites us over to watch "Delicatessen," which she's never seen. We buy Smirnoff ices and Pimms and lemonade in a can. Pimms is a kind of spiced gin that is very popular here. I have never seen it in the US. It tastes of Christmas.
Janelle loves the movie, and we talk while the TV automatically flips back to the BBC. "The Cell" is on. It is awful, but the costumes are excellent. All bad guys should wear John Galliano.
