Day 264/365: Friday’s Unscientific Poll: Birthday presents [20180921|14:34]

Dear Readers, this weekend contains my birthday, on which I become the answer to life, the universe, and everything! (Douglas Adams fans will have immediately deduced how old I am. Everyone else will have to use Google.)

I’m very pleased about this, and am considering whether I should attempt to do another project in celebration of it, because naturally I am not busy enough with this daily blog project + full time job + bringing up two small children. One of the nice things that has happened in my forties is that I’ve accepted that some of my flaws are never going to go away, like voluntarily taking on too many responsibilities, and that I should just accept that I’m probably not going to finish everything I start.

Anyway, as my birthday approaches, there have been cards and gifts arriving with each day’s post. Not loads, I hasten to add, but enough to keep my curiosity piqued. And thus, today’s Unscientific Poll.

Poll #2085280 Birthday presents

When it's my birthday, I like for my gifts to be

a complete surprise. I put them aside and don't look at or touch them until the day.
7(77.8%)
thoroughly prodded, poked, shaken, and pondered. I consider volume, shape, sound, weight, and (if known) the giver's identity, and then I attempt to deduce what's inside.

Happy birthday for this weekend.

(Thankfully I didn't have to Google, even though I'm not a fan of Douglas Adams...).

I like your description of your flaws. I live like that as well, and though a few years older, I've not come to the acceptance that you have. I like your solution. Accept that I won't finish everything that I start.

Heh, thanks. I don't know that I'm fully there with routine acceptance, but it's certainly gotten easier to let go of things (and communicate that I'm doing so to the relevant parties, where necessary) when I know I've not got the energy to continue.

Happy birthday! May you feel all the joy of the “and everything.” You only get to BE the answer for one year, so enjoy it!

Happy happy birthday!

As for the poll, none of the above - people know I prefer experiences to gifts. The idea of accumulating random stuff stresses me out, so take me out for dinner/drinks/coffee instead, or get us tickets to something you know I'll enjoy doing.

Exception: I do like getting actual wrapped gifts if it's something we can open and consume together right now - food/drink/whatever.

I like going out to a fancy lunch if possible.

Exception: I do like getting actual wrapped gifts if it's something we can open and consume together right now - food/drink/whatever.

Ooh, yes. I asked for Hotel Chocolat for exactly this reason. The bloke got an enormous box, and it's already half empty from all the sharing. :D

Happy Birthday Week! (at least that's what we do around our house, and we have a lot of birthdays!)

I still exist. Thanks for not cutting me even though I haven't been around in a huge long while ... I think I haven't read anything here in over a year. I just spent a couple hours while teaching lab catching up on some old posts. =)

Good luck with the new job. As I've told you countless times, you're amazing at whatever you do. It's nice to get quick job offers. For my current position, apparently the Dean tried to chase me down as I walked out of the interview, after they had a couple minutes to discuss things. (I walked too fast, apparently.)

We should e-mail catch up some time.

Helloooo and thank you! I'm so glad to hear from you. Whenever I have occasion to recall our years in the lab together, it's always a pleasure. I think of you and your family often. My mental image of you with your big beaming smile surrounded by a gaggle of happy children can't be too far off, I reckon.

Haha, you DO walk fast! I remember trying to keep up with you. :)
