Day 229/365: Caterpillar, Kelp [20180817|18:55]

[the weather today is |Baffled]

I found a caterpillar in my salad today. Well, not so much "found" as "poked my salad with a fork and watched in surprise as a caterpillar leapt to the relative safety of another region of my plate".

Keiki was delighted. As soon as his daddy and Humuhumu appeared from a trip to the WC, he called across the pub, "Daddy! There was a CATERPILLAR in the lettuce and it jumped onto Mummy's LEMON!"

The looks on the faces of the other diners - not to mention the waitstaff - were a sight to behold.

Later, I bought the children a lollipop.

Me: "Keiki, what does your green lollipop taste like?"

Keiki, gravely: "Kelp."

At top volume! Tonight's gem as we were about to pay for dinner: "Daddy, do you have money in your wallet?"

Please be quiet, madam, or everybody will want one!

I once bought a salad and chips in the restaurant of Littlewood's, a now-defunct department store chain, and discovered a slug in the lettuce. It put me off eating for about a week! I'm afraid I threw my plate on the floor in disgust and marched out as quick as my legs would take me. That may appear to have been a slight over-reaction, but it happened more than thirty years ago and I've never forgotten my horror at the fact that I nearly ate a slug!

Eesh! I have to admit, I would have been a lot less relaxed about a slug, too. I wasn't very fussed about the caterpillar although I did check the rest of the salad quite carefully before I ate it.

Most of the time, I have to deliberately not think about what slithering, wriggling creatures might be in any food that I don't prepare myself!

I hope the wait staff also brought you another salad! Those lollipops were well earned!

Heh, I wasn't too fussed about the caterpillar. I did check the rest of the lettuce carefully though!

It was a very lively caterpillar, so I was at least reassured that the salad was fresh...!

A couple at a table near us smiled, but then quietly put down their menus teo minutes later and left. :/
