Fridays' Unscientific Poll: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells [20160226|09:51]

Before Christmas, the bloke & I were amused to discover that the alternate Batman-based lyrics to "Jingle Bells" apparently percolate into the consciousness of children at a very early age.

Since Christmas, we've been amused because Humuhumu will randomly sing them whenever the fancy strikes her, no matter if Christmas is still 10 months away. (As were the elderly couple who were exiting Powis Castle at the same time as us last weekend. They applauded her, which caused her to be overcome with shyness and hide behind Daddy's legs.)

I found it intriguing that the lyrics differ from the ones I sang as a child in the US and are specifically British-English because of the use of the word "motorway". Now I'm wondering if there are other regional variations!

Poll #2037991 Jingle Bells, Batman Smells

As a child, I mostly sang these alternate Batman-based lyrics to the Christmas carol

Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg/Batmobile lost a wheel and Joker got away
Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin flew away/Santa Claus lost his claws on the motorway
Something else which I shall write in the text box

I sang these alternate Batman-based lyrics instead:

Actually, i lied

I dont recall the words after batmobile lost its wheel! But definitely not claws/motorway!

Fascinating it exists in uk and a diff version. Crikey! Is there an Aussie version too or other former colonies

Ah, fantastic

Now if only we can divine why "bloody" is such a popular curse

Wouldn't fit in the poll box!

Aussie variant when I was growing up:

Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin flew away/Wonder Woman lost her bosoms flying TAA (an Australian airline)

Questions this gives rise to:
1. How do you lose your bosoms on a plane?
2. Why was she flying commercial when she has an invisible jet?

Not to mention the WW/TAA variation doesn't follow any particular story. The "Joker got away" version always made sense to me because Batman and Robin had been introduced in the first line, right?

Will have to look at the poll results, but Quatlet sings "Barman smells, Robin laid an egg" consistently, and I think then "Spiderman/ had an accident/ and now he's got one leg" !

I'm surprised Humuhumu hasn't come home singing the latter, given how superhero-obsessed some of her nursery compatriots are!

Update: I asked Quatlet, who is still singing it at intervals, and he is sure that after Robin laid an egg, it's "Father Christmas lost his knickers and now he's flown away" - didn't like to ask if that referred to Robins or FC's pants...
