[the weather today is |nts: buy a decent scanner]

My mom & I went through a big pile of old photos while I was home earlier this month, labeling and dating them where we could. I chose a few to take back with me and scan in.

Here she is as a little girl in New York. She was quite a serious-faced child. In most of her photos, she seems to be concentrating on seomthing.

This is in the bosun’s seat as a teenager in the yacht my grandfather built, The Gull. Notice the lack of safety equipment (lifejacket, anyone?).

Her high school graduation picture. So pretty!

Mom and her first boyfriend at university. I think it can adequately be summed up with the expression PHWOAR.

</a>

Here she is in Honolulu during her first year at university. These were taken by her Elvis-and-Polaroid-obsessed Japanese flatmate. There are quite a lot of these, so I picked the ones that show off her fabulous style and her favourite place to go, Hanauma Bay. (My childhood memories of Hanauma Bay are among my fondest.) When I look at these, part of me wishes I had time to dress this way - to take such care over creating a “look” with my clothes and hair. I don’t think I’m frumpy, but I don’t have time to be this polished.

Exhibit F, uncut because these are my favourites.

When Mom and her friend Kathy were 17, they decided they were going to go to New York and sign up with a modeling agency. To do that, they needed portfolios. Kathy took these photos for Mom’s portfolio. Sadly, they chickened out when they arrived in the city and went shopping instead. It’s a pity Mom was too shy to carry out her plan, because I suspect she would easily have found modeling work.

Wonderful pictures! Your mum is beautiful, and I'm always a fan of photos of relatives having a lovely time on boats without safety equipment.

Psh, safety equipment, whatevs.

Also: LEGS holy crap. And you look a lot like her (I don't mean in the legs, I mean in the face, but maybe your legs do look like hers, I'm not sure).

Yes. I also look a lot like my dad, but oddly my resemblance to him doesn't often seem to be as obvious unless we're together.

I wish I'd inherited her legs. I didn't. Maybe Passenger will.

Well, except when I'm with my dad - then people often comment on how much I look like him!

Oh my heavens, you look so like her! It's wonderful. No question at all which kiln you were fired in!

So pretty!

She used to get compared to Audrey Hepburn. I have another photo where her hairdo makes that resemblance particularly eerie!

Well, I don't know about me, but I certainly agree about Mom. She's a classic beauty. I find reactions to me are much more mixed - some people think I'm physically attractive and others seem to find me really weird-looking.

Your mom is still an elegant and beautiful woman! You have many of her features, not least among them, her sweet nature.

I don't think she ever really knew it. She was always reserved and under-confident. Clearly it's a shame we wise internet folks weren't around when she was younger to reassure her! :D

Wow, I don't think I ever realized just how much you look like your mom, & in the same breath, may I also state that, dang, she's a stunner :)

I love, love looking at old b&w photos, especially when I know a bit of back-story--thank you for indulging us :)

I love them too - this is why I'm trying to be sure to write down all the stuff Mom tells me on the photos, so I have a record. It's an indulgence for me as well! :)
